Occupy: Space

posted by Molly

This post has nothing to do with the Occupy movement. Moving on with my life and yours, there are ways in which we literally occupy space. How much do we literally take up? How much space does our presence take up?

As artists, our art occupies, or takes up a certain amount of space— the shape of the stage affects how the dramatic piece can be performed; the size of a visual piece affects how far the audience stands back to view it; the poet’s inability to edit down his questionably genius thoughts is seen when he takes up no space in respected journals every month.

We’ve been reading through submissions for the Space and Place issue, and as we do, we want to encourage those of you who haven’t submitted yet to consider the space/place of art. What space does our art occupy, and how does it reflect upon the spaces (physical and intellectual) that we occupy?
