In light of our next theme to be announced, a film recommendation. The Descendants is a comedic drama directed by Alexander Payne, starring George Clooney and Shailene Woodley. Set among the islands many consider to be paradise — Hawaii — the events that unfold cannot exactly be called picturesque. The film opens with a somber narration, something to the effect of tragedy finds us wherever we are, paradise included. And there is tragedy… and dysfunction and confrontation. The theme of space is pervasive but subtle. Its focus is not on the spatial, but the relational aspects, the oft troublesome space between spouses, between parent and child. It is a narrative about the journey to a place where that space can finally be addressed — whether in the pushing away or drawing close, candid conversation prevails. Despite the weight, the film is not without its moments of levity (I did say comedic drama). And if this work of fiction is any indication, family, heritage, and land progress can be stewarded toward some sort of meaningful unity. Well worth the watch, especially for its well-grounded cast. I have not seen a movie this tangibly honest since 2008’s Rachel Getting Married.
